This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I had a great conversation with actor/producer, Alya Lei.
Alya Lei is an actress and producer, known for Lucifer (2016), 13 Reasons Why (2017) and Moonlighter (2018). She has worked on network television shows, been cast in numerous independent films, corporate industrials, and booked principal roles in commercials. She is consistently working on her craft with a variety of acting coaches.
Alya is a podcaster and can be heard hosting “The Actor’s Resource podcast with Alya Lei” on all the podcast platforms. She is also a member (and producer) of “FreeFall International” Improv troupe – an international group of actors and creators, established during the pandemic, who perform live, unscripted shows for people all over the world.
In our conversation, Alya talks a lot about all of the acting teachers who have inspired her: Richard Seyd, Scott Sedita, and Jo Kelly. We discuss the hard work that goes into being an actor and all of the methods one can employ to develop their craft.
Alya talks about the lack of Asian #representation on television when she was a kid and how that discouraged her from pursuing acting until after she had graduated college. Alya shares some really great advice for actors about the basics of what they need to learn and what acting schools leave out. We talk about getting into meditation, finding an agent, and building community.

Interesting subject. Heard something that revolutionized how I think of attracting my tribe recently: serve who you used to be. I paraphrase. In other words share how you overcame whatever you had to overcome, talk to your younger self. Those who find value in the value you share are your tribe.
